The only lights on in Val’s Montlake duplex apartment were the lamp beside her bed and the screen on her computer. She was up late studying, trying to catch up on the Internet courses she was taking. [br]
Snoozie, her big gray cat, slept on his pillow on the back of the desk. Even asleep, he was great company. [br]
Val sighed. With rehearsals, she wouldn’t be doing much studying this week. She’d be getting home late and she needed her beauty rest, needed to look her absolute best for the dress rehearsal, then the fashion show on Saturday night. She owed it to the people who were counting on her.[br]
The Internet contest she’d won six months ago had secured her a place as a La Belle Lingerie fashion model. Out of thousands of women, she was the lucky winner.[br]
The work was grueling. She’d never understood how hard a fashion model worked. Though La Belle models weren’t half-starved, anorexic women like high-fashion, couture design models, they had to be in top physical condition. The women were expected to ooze sexuality. They’d been chosen for their full breasts, small waists, and perfectly curving hips. La Belle models wore lingerie designed to appeal to men—which was the reason women bought it.[br]
A strict diet regimen was required, along with the two to three hours a day she spent with a trainer to ensure her body stayed perfectly toned and fit.[br]
The job had required her to drop out of school to train for the fashion show and do PR work for the company, but La Belle was paying her a boatload of money, enough that she’d be able to finish at the U of Washington next year with a degree in veterinary medicine.[br]
Val loved animals and always had. Becoming a vet was a long-time dream, but her scholarship had run out after she’d earned her bachelor’s degree. With her parents’ help and working two part-time jobs, she’d managed to get through her first year of vet school, but the tuition was nearly twelve thousand, with fees on top of that, living expenses, food, and travel to and from campus.
On a whim, she’d entered the modeling contest, and to her amazement, she’d won.[br]
God and the genes she’d inherited had blessed her with excellent bone structure, as well as a really good body. Though a lot of women would think the high-paying, seemingly glamorous life of a model was the job of a lifetime, running around half-naked in sequins and feathers just wasn’t the life for her.[br]
Instead, she was using her physical assets to pursue the goals she had set for herself when she was in high school. Val glanced at the clock, saw it was after midnight, reached over and turned off her laptop. Tomorrow was another rehearsal day. At the end of the summer, her contract with La Belle would be up and she could finish her final term at school. Her job as a fashion model would be over and she could return to a normal life again.[br]
Val smiled. After the whirlwind tour and her fifteen minutes of fame, it might take a while to figure out exactly what normal was.[br]

* * *[br]

Sitting in front of his laptop on the desk in his bedroom, the man moved the mouse and changed the font. He chose another font and typed the next word, then changed the font again, continuing, one by one, until he finished the note. The printer hummed as he printed the words on a plain white sheet of paper.[br] [br]

Sinners, SLUTS, and WHORES--BEWARE.
REPENT or you WILL be NEXT.[br] [br]

He was proud of his handiwork. This note matched the first, its message more than clear. When the note was found, there’d be no doubt who was responsible. And he’d be careful to leave no clues that could be traced back to him. He just had to work out the timing, then make sure everything went the way he planned.[br]
As he mentally went over his preparations, he began to look forward to the encounter, always an adrenaline rush. He’d been missing that lately. He settled back in his chair and studied the note.[br]
Soon, he’d deliver it.[br]
He smiled, anticipating the challenge, then the satisfaction of a job well done.[br]

Ethan’s second day at the theater was hectic. The women were busy rehearsing, and for the first time, he began to see what a difficult job they had. Not just walking out on the stage tossing their hair and smiling but placing each step exactly right, moving in ways that best displayed the garments they were selling. They had to learn dozens of different poses and cues from the choreographer, who was constantly making changes and asking them to relearn something they had only just learned a few minutes before.[br]
Add to that, the way they took care of their bodies required tremendous work. Ethan regularly pumped weights and worked out in the gym in his apartment complex. It was just part of his job. These women worked with trainers, dieted furiously, limited their alcohol intake to practically zilch, and went to bed early. When in the hell did they have any fun?[br]
After watching them a while, when a woman he’d dubbed Heather-with-the-silver hair strutted down the runway in her sky-high heels, stepped wrong and went down hard, he was only a little surprised.[br]
Being close to the stage, he jumped up on the runway and walked over to help. Her nails dug into his arm as she took hold and tried to stand, released a grimace of pain.[br]
“Take it easy.” Crouching beside her, he urged her to lie back down.[br]
“Don’t move her!” Daniel Clemens and his young assistant rushed forward. “Someone call Dr. Harrison!”[br]
“I’m okay,” the blonde said, but he could hear the anxiety in her voice. “Please—just give me a minute, Daniel. I’ll be fine.”[br]
Clemens was tall and slender, with light brown hair moussed into some kind of bed-head style. Ethan had a
hunch he was gay, but he wasn’t flamboyant. And as Matt Carlyle had said, he was clearly good at his job.[br]
The choreographer knelt next to Ethan. “We can’t stop rehearsal. We need to get her off the stage, but she can’t walk on that ankle. Do you think you could carry her back to one of the dressing rooms?”[br]
“Not a problem.” Bending, Ethan scooped the girl up in his arms and started striding toward the back of the stage.[br]
Heather slid her arms around his neck. “Wow. If my ankle wasn’t hurting so damn much, I’d be impressed.”[br]
His mouth edged up. “You aren’t that heavy.”[br]
“Oh, you are a sweet talker.” Heather flashed him a pain-filled smile, then returned her attention to Clemens, who hurried along beside them. “I’ll be okay, Daniel, really. It only hurts a little. I’ll be fine by tomorrow.”[br]
“Sorry, dear girl. You know show policy. We’ll have to see what the doctor says. I’ll go make sure he’s on his way.”[br]
Daniel hurried off as Ethan carried Heather into one of the dressing rooms. He tried not to notice the array of hot-pink panties, skimpy lace bras, feather boas, sequined thongs, and God-only-knew what else. Gently, he settled Heather on the sofa against the wall and stood up just as another woman pushed her way into the already cramped quarters.[br]
Though her dimples weren’t showing, he recognized the blonde. Valentine.[br]
She reached down and gently caught hold of the injured woman’s hand. “How are you doing, Heather?”[br]
At the contact, the girl fought not to cry. “Oh, God, Val, I can’t believe this.”[br]
“You’re going to be okay. Just lie back and let me take a look, all right?” Valentine knelt next to the platinum blonde.“Somebody get an ice pack. We need to keep the swelling down.”[br]
She glanced over, spotted him standing in the doorway, and seemed to remember who he was. “Ethan, can you find someone to get an ice pack for us?”[br]
He nodded. “I’ll take care of it.” His last glimpse as he walked out of the dressing room was Valentine moving the ankle. He heard Heather’s hiss of pain, and then she started to cry.[br]
“I’ve got the ice coming,” Daniel told him when he reached the open area behind the stage. “We keep a couple of physicians on our payroll, on call for emergencies like these. It shouldn’t take Dr. Harrison long to get here.”[br]
“Will she be able to do the show?” Ethan asked.
Daniel shook his head. “From the looks of that sprain, it isn’t likely. La Belle has liability concerns when it comes to job-related injuries. Besides, I don’t think she’d be able to walk the runway in a pair of spike heels.”[br]
Ethan didn’t think so either. But then, he couldn’t figure out how the models managed to do it when there was nothing wrong with them.[br]

I've been meaning to read Kat Martin's books. I love suspense and mystery and I just had to pick this one up when I saw it. When something starts out with "Sinners, SLUTS, and WHORES--BEWARE. REPENT or you WILL be NEXT.", You know there's gonna be action. Kat doesn't disappoint!

Ethan has sworn off women! He's had a bad experience in his little girl's mother and doesn't want a repeat. Val doesn't have time for men. They both resist, resist, resist but are unable to hold out for long. Danger has a way to bring you together quickly.

I love a good mystery, especially one I can't figure out right away. Kat created a great plot and added some twists to it that really make the story.

Lingerie models and bodyguards?! YUM! It's not a surprise that two couples hooked up in this story. The surprise was that one couple didn't make it!!! Dirk was deliciously alpha and I really liked Megan! So I'm glad they are getting a full storyline!

5 Reasons to Admire Miss Ivory Moore! ~ Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen

 [br] [br]

Dead Earl's in Virginal Beds!? Who are you gonna call?? Miss Ivory Moore! Kelly Bowen's heroines are damn unusual!

[space size=15]

[book-info]

 [space size=10]

I have never read a novel quite like this one!  Kelly Bowen's heroines are always a bit unusual and a little radical for the times. Ivory is definitely that! [br]  [br]

[bctt tweet="5 Reasons to Admire Miss Ivory Moore!"]

5 Reasons to Admire Miss Ivory Moore!

1. At ease with redressing dead Earls found tied to virginal beds.

2. Perfectly happy with ordering a Duke around.

3. First name basis with dockside cutthroats.

4. Need a scandal hidden? Ivory's your girl!

5. She's got massive Lady Balls! [br]  [br]

Max was fun, but I fell for Ivory in this one! She's snarky, logical and holds back no punches! She knows who she is and what she's capable of and doesn't apologize for it!

I had to roll my eyes at Captain Maximus Harcourt, Duke of Alderidge. How he expected to leave England for ten years and come back to the same sister I don't know! Kudos go out to his sister, though! When she wants adventure she sure as hell gets it!! This story was intense! There are several side characters in this one that need to be fleshed out and have their own story and I have no doubt that they will get them!

There was romance, of course and it was surprising how Max fell hard for Ivory and she still kept him distant but she has her reasons. The adventure and action kept me in the story the entire time. the relationship between Max and Ivory was interesting to say the least but it was the mystery and action that thrived for me.

Kelly Bowen's first entry in her Season for Scandal series was off the chart interesting!

Synopsis

Captain Maximus Harcourt, the unconventional tenth Duke of Alderidge, can deal with tropical storms, raging seas, and the fiercest of pirates. But he's returned home from his latest voyage to find a naked earl—quite inconveniently deceased—tied to his missing sister's bed. And he has only one place to turn. Now he's at the mercy of the captivating Miss Ivory Moore of Chegarre & Associates, known throughout London for smoothing over the most dire of scandals.

Miss Moore treats the crisis as though it were no more serious than a cup of spilt tea on an expensive rug. As though this sort of thing happened on the job every day. Max has never in all his life met a woman with such nerve. Her dark eyes are too wide, her mouth is too full, her cheekbones too sharp. Yet together, she's somehow...flawless. It's just like his love for her, imperfect, unexpected—yet absolutely true.

Review ~ The Art of Taming a Rake by Nicole Jordan

This was a tried and true historical story with some twists that were unusual!

[space size=15]

[book-info]

 [space size=10]

Venetia Stratham is a feisty, independent and one hell of a woman. She is determined to protect her sister from her fate, no matter if she has been disowned and discarded from her family for jilting her cheating betrothed on their wedding day. [br][br]

Quinn Wilde, Earl of Traherne is a rake extraordinaire and former best friend of Venetia's ex., secretly attracted to her for years he feels guilty about her tragically public scene. [br][br]

So Traherne has decided to try to boost Venetia's sisters marriage prospects by "courting" her himself. Venetia hears about it and races back to England to confront him. Even going so far as to infiltrate a high-class brothel to find him and demand he leave her sister alone. She, of course, thinks he's rather nefarious. [br][br]

The attraction between Venetia and Quinn sizzles right of the page from the very beginning. Traherne wastes no time in laying claim to Venetia. Special Licence STAT!. Although, that might be because everyone thinks she shot him!  Of course, she didn't but he's in danger and the rest of the story is how they fall in love with each other and I have to say it leads to some intriguing drama and mystery. [br][br]

I adored Traherne!  He made my heart go pitter patter! Venetia was a rocking good heroine! No simpering miss there! Her parents are awful! And that's the understatement of the year. [br][br]

This was a tried and true historical story with some twists that were unusual! Thanks to Kelly Bowen! [br][br]

Synopsis

Despite his notorious reputation, Quinn Wilde, Earl of Traherne, has mostly honorable intentions. So when beautiful Venetia Stratham boldly enters a gentlemen’s club, demanding that Quinn stop courting her sister, he does what any bachelor would do: He kisses her. With her sharp wit, intoxicating passion, and surprising vulnerability, Venetia is irresistible—except for all this nonsense about threatening to shoot Quinn. But when clandestine enemies make an actual attempt on the earl’s life, Venetia is implicated. To save her good name, Quinn does what any true gentleman must do: He proposes.

Thus Venetia finds herself wed to arrogant, wickedly sensual Quinn, whose devilish ways are as legendary as his rumored skills as a lover. Yet vexingly, her body rebels against her vow to remain immune to his many charms. If only she could reform the infuriating nobleman—without diminishing his undeniable allure. As Venetia discovers that a true rake is hard to tame, Quinn faces an even greater challenge: winning his wife’s fragile trust . . . while defending both their lives.

The other half of the Tempest Twins gets her match!

Excerpt

“Come now, Miss Tempest, my uncle expects me to dance with one of you,” he said as he came wavering up to her. “You cannot stand here all night.” [br]
She looked around for her sister, Lady Aveley. Anyone. “I-I-I, oh dear. Mr. Rowland, I don’t believe—” she stammered out, even as Mr. Rowland took her hand, his strong, sure fingers lacing around hers. [br]
No man had ever just come up and claimed her before for the simple reason that Kempton was a small village, and everyone knew (thanks in no small part to Mrs. Bagley-Butterton) that dancing with Lavinia was akin to asking to have your toes trimmed—or those of your neighbors—or to have something valuable broken .[br]
Or a section of your house scorched. [br]
Mr. Rowland, completely unaware of the mortal danger into which he was placing himself and a good portion of London society, just caught hold of her hand and tugged her out onto the floor, utterly and completely deaf to her protests. [br]
“No, please, sir, I don’t think this is wise,” she told him. And she meant it. This was a very bad notion. [br]
But unfortunately, her protests had no effect on Mr. Rowland, horrible scoundrel that he was …[br]
Has that been mentioned as yet? That Mr. Alaster Rowland, the presumptive heir to his uncle’s barony, is the worst sort of knave? It should be. And often.[br]
He was also the most handsome devil Lavinia Tempest had ever met. Or had held her hand. Or smiled down at her with a wicked light in his eyes.[br]
Lavinia had never seen brown eyes hold that sort of promise, the kind that sent a shiver of something so delicious, so dangerous, down her spine that she made a note right there and then to add a new rule to her list at her first opportunity:[br]
No. 83. A proper gentleman should not make one’s insides get so very warm.[br]
In truth, as Mr. Alaster Rowland slid his hand around her waist, took her other hand in his, something altogether improper happened to Lavinia.[br]
It had to be improper, for it certainly wasn’t proper.[br]
“Mr. Rowland, I cannot,” she protested one last time, when to her horror, the band struck up a cotillion.[br]
A cotillion? The last time she’d tried to dance a cotillion, Lady Essex’s house, Foxgrove, had caught fire.[br]
Yet here was Mr. Rowland, laughing and leaning closer. “But of course you can,” he whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin.[br]
It was as if he had brushed his fingers there —right against the curve of her neck. It was so intimate, so promising a gesture, that it left Lavinia in a blinding daze.[br]
Yet Lavinia, the girl who had made a study of all things proper, knew exactly how to behave when all was proceeding at a proper pace, but right now she was being steered down a path she’d never taken before and assailed by a river of improper desires.[br]
At least she assumed they were desires, for it was a dangerous, heady sort of warmth spreading through her limbs.[br]
That, and something else happened. Her feet—which before had always seemed two sizes too big—untangled. It was as if the warmth of Mr. Rowland’s touch, his teasing glance, his confidence in her, awakened a very graceful part of her.[br]
Lavinia straightened, head held just so, and a long-forgotten admonishment from the dancing master Lady Hathaway had hired years ago, tripped through her thoughts.[br]
Dancing is all about elegance.[br]
And right there and then, Lavinia felt elegant. Not because her gown was proper. Or that she was standing on the dance floor of Almack’s (though that certainly helped) but because the man gazing down at her held her, not at arm’s length and in obvious fear, but with all the proper care and respect of a gentleman.[br]
Moments later, Lavinia Tempest found herself dancing.[br]
Perfectly. Like a lady. Mr. Rowland moved, as did everyone else, and Lavinia moved as well.[br]
And in the right direction.[br]

[divider]

I don't know about Lavinia but I like a man who makes my insides go warm... don't you? Tuck and Lavinia are a perfect match :) The synchronous dancing proves it long before anything else! [br] [br]

This story coincides with The Viscount Who Lived Down The Lane, Lavinia's twin sisters' story. It's interesting to see the events that take place through Lavinia's point of view. [br][br]  Miss Lavinia Tempest is entering Society for the first time. She's eager to find a husband with all her criteria. Everything falls apart though when Alastair  "Tuck" Rowland an outright knave stumbles when dancing with her in the middle of Almacks then leaves her on the floor! (Yes he was a bit tipsy...) [br] [br]

Miss Lavinia Tempest is entering Society for the first time. She's eager to find a husband with all her criteria. Everything falls apart though when Alastair  "Tuck" Rowland an outright knave stumbles when dancing with her in the middle of Almacks then leaves her on the floor! (Yes he was a bit tipsy...) [br] [br]

Tuck compounds matters when he makes a bet saying he can make her a Diamond by the end of the Season. Of course, this brings them together and with some rather unconventional help, he begins to mold and teach her. [br] [br]

Lavinia is a rather determined woman. She endures a lot throughout the season and sticks with it admirably, even when faced with the tons rejection. Tuck is rather misnomered because while he did make that reprehensible bet, he's not much of a knave, in truth. [br] [br]

We do get to see the return of the other three ladies and gents from the first three books in the series, Along Came a Duke, And The Miss Ran Away With the Duke, and If Wishes Were Earls, although it's just a cameo appearance.  It was definitely an intriguing story and their love was slow to build but so sweet to see. Review ~ The Lost Soul of Lord Badewyn by Mia Marlowe

A Regency Paranormal. How could I not?! I jumped into this series on #3 and have to start at the beginning because it is just THAT good! Deliciously good!

[space size=15]

[book-info]

 [space size=10]

A group of Paranormally inclined regency lords, ladies and even commoners. They are called the Order of the M.U.S.E, Metaphysical Union of Sensory Extraordinaire. [br]  [br]

Heroine ~ Meg Anthony is a commoner who has out of body experiences of finding things or even people. She is a mixture of innocence and sophistication. [br] [br]

Hero ~ Samuel, Lord of Badewyn is a Nephilim, the son of a fallen Angel and a human. Samuel can see the future, not clearly, but enough to send warnings to the Order when needed. He's cut himself off from civilization in an attempt to circumvent a sort of curse. [br]  [br]

There are several plot lines running throughout the story, but it is easy enough to keep track of them. The Duke of Camden, the Order's leader is searching for answers from beyond the grave. Samuel is trying to protect Meg from a fate worse than death. Meg is trying to do her best to help Camden. [br]  [br]

The romance was wonderful, the story was full of adventure and mystery. The characters interesting beyond measure. I'll be enjoying the other chapters of this series soon!

Review ~ A Sinful Deception by Isabella Bradford

Bradfords’ second novel in the Brecondridge Brothers Trilogy, proves that her heroines are not the norm for the genre.

[space size=15]

[book-info]

 [space size=10]

Lady Serena Carew, a noble-born heiress was raised in India. The hero, Lord George Breconridge spent some time in India, although after she had moved back to England, so they never met, but have a common love of the country. They meet on a dare and it leads to a marriage neither is ready for. As they fall in love, the huge secret Serena hides threatens to tear them apart. This was the perfect setup of romance and angst as the reader waits to find out how and when the secret will affect the couple. Her jerk of an uncle accuses her of being an imposter and even goes so far as to abuse her elderly aunt. Bradfords' story has depth and tons of character. I, personally, love stories with a little meat to them and this one provides that! [br]

Lord Geoff, is the essential lady’s man, but when he meets Serena, he’s intrigued. His falling for her is so sweet and Serena, while she’s scared of how her secret might affect her relationship with him, can’t help but falling for him. I couldn’t tell if this one was going to get a traditional HEA or not, and it was a little frustrating for me but it kept me reading! I do LOVE how it turned out though! Can’t wait to see what unusual plot and setting Bradford has created for the last brother, Rivers!

Quote-Tastic Review ~ A Wicked Pursuit by Isabella Bradford

quote-tastic final with green border"Quote-Tastic" is a meme hosted every Monday on Herding Cats & Burning Soup. To participate you have to post a favorite quote from a current or past read.

“You’re a strong man, my lord,” the woman said, tucking a woolen blanket around him as if he were a swaddling babe. “A brave one, too. Here, take my hand, and squeeze it whenever you feel the pain’s too great to bear. I’ll be walking beside you, and I promise I won’t let go.”
Her hand was surprisingly soft, her fingers warm and more comforting than he’d ever dreamed a woman’s could be. She wouldn’t let him go. He felt certain of that.
She wouldn’t . . . let him . . . go . . .

"In Isabella Bradford’s enthralling new trilogy, three noble brothers—London’s most scandalous rakes—are about to do the unthinkable: settle down. Harry Fitzroy, Earl of Hargreave, is the first to meet his match and lose his heart . . . to a lady he least expected." ~ Goodreads
A great start to Bradford's Brecondridge Brothers Trilogy!

A near fatal accident, long recovery, realizing he almost married the wrong sister is what is in store for Harry Fitzroy, heir to a dukedom. His flighty, foolish, almost-fiancee, Julia scares his horse and causes him to be thrown, knocked unconscious, to break a leg and then she flees to London to "party it up" and leave the responsibility of caring for him to her younger sister, Lady Augusta or "Gus". [br]

I loved Gus!! She wasn't a pushy heroine but a strong silent dependable, trustworthy lady. She's the wallflower to Julia's "Diamond" and Harry falls for her hard! Harry is annoying, but during his long recovery, he turns endearing. How Ms. Bradford makes that work is magical! I'd recommend this story to someone who loves unusual historicals!

“Why the devil don’t you leave?” he demanded. “If I’m so damned offensive to you, why don’t you leave now like you always do? Go, leave me, and be like your sister.”
“Because I’m not my sister,” she said. “That’s why.”

Abandoned by Julia before he can propose, the unlucky bachelor finds himself trapped in the country in the care of Julia’s younger sister.

Charlotte "Lottie" Walker is a lady thief. Owen Renderwell is the Scotland Yard Detective who fell in love with her while forcibly enlisting her father's help to bring down a criminal.
Poor Lottie fell for him too but felt betrayed when he took all the accolades from the kidnapping rescue that her father died to accomplish. [br]
Secrets to misunderstandings abound in this story. Owen needs Lottie's help in cracking a code a murderer leaves behind. Their chemistry is tangible but their distance is clear. I enjoyed trying to figure out who the murderer was and the second chance romance was sweet.

Synopsis

The Lady is a Thief

Years ago, Owen Renderwell earned acclaim—and a title—for the dashing rescue of a kidnapped duchess. But only a select few knew that Scotland Yard’s most famous detective was working alongside London’s most infamous thief…and his criminally brilliant daughter, Charlotte Walker.

Lottie was like no other woman in Victorian England. She challenged him. She dazzled him. She questioned everything he believed and everything he was, and he has never wanted anyone more. And then he lost her.

Now a private detective on the trail of a murderer, Owen has stormed back into Lottie’s life. She knows that no matter what they may pretend, he will always be a man of the law and she a criminal. Yet whenever he’s near, Owen has a way of making things complicated…and long for a future that can never be theirs.

I'm afraid for this one I should've said no! See what I did there? Ha Ha! No, but really, this was touted to be for Susan Mallery fan's and since I like small-town romance, I grabbed it.

Sigh, It started off good! The meet up was really sexy! The romance though fell by the wayside and competed with the small-town family feud. They both kept secrets from each other and Carden was sent by his Mama to spy and manipulate Lindsey. Dirty just Dirty. :( When the reason for the feud came out, Lindsey and Carden didn't resolve their difference for a month afterward!

Synopsis

Welcome to Thistle Bend! Perfect for fans of Susan Mallery, this charming series debut introduces a small town where old secrets are revealed—and wounded hearts are opened to new love.

A year after being laid off from the Smithsonian, Lindsey Simms says yes to a job offer as curator of a heritage museum in Thistle Bend, Colorado (population 1,519). It could be worse—and it is. Because the new museum has escalated a dispute between the Karlssons, Lindsey’s relatives, and the Crenshaws, a blood feud which goes way back to a land deal that changed the fortunes of both families. Trying to stay objective, Lindsey can’t tell anyone about her conflict of interest—especially not the ruggedly handsome handyman fixing up her cabin, who seems to be keeping secrets of his own.

Although he’s the executive director of the family trust and one of Colorado’s most eligible bachelors, Carden Crenshaw prefers getting his hands dirty in town and on his sprawling ranch. Staying busy has given him an excuse not to risk heartbreak, but getting to know the beautiful “museum lady” makes him reconsider. Little does he know, the heat between them will only add fuel to the fire—unless this unlikely couple can prove they’re lovers, not fighters.

Accidental Marriage? I though cool!! They'd only known each other a few days, there wasn't much romance to be had before the "accidental marriage" and really he couldn't tell her about the marriage and legality of it because... it would ruin her reputation??!! Sigh. Lady Sarah seemed immature and Braeden seemed like a jerk. After they reconciled to being married he expected her to drop whatever she was doing and go with him on this highly anticipated expedition of his. I just couldn't connect to the characters. It looks like this might have been the end of the series and it was my first Callie Hutton novel. I've seen others rave about this one so, don't take my negative reaction as gospel, try it out for yourself if you like this type of book.

Scotland, 1817

Review & Giveaway ~ The Earl's Complete Surrender by Sophie Barnes

 [br]

Enter to Win a complete print set of

the Rules of Scoundrels Series by Sarah MacLean

I've been waiting on this forever! Celebrity Gossip in the 1800's?! Road Trip Romance! Enemies to Lovers!

Excerpt

They reached the front door where the coach was being unloaded by footmen. The men who’d occupied it, however, were nowhere in sight. The butler on the other hand, was very much present, issuing orders to each of the footman as they carried trunks into the house. [br]
“Excuse me, Mr. Caine,” Chloe said as she and Fiona walked up to him. [br]
Raising his chin in the typical butlery manner that conveyed that his complete attention had been drawn, he spoke a succinct, “Yes, Lady Newbury?”[br]
“My sister and I were out walking when this carriage drove past.” Angling her head, Chloe indicated the carriage in question. “I immediately recognized the Marquess of Hainsworth, but I failed to place his companion. Perhaps you can enlighten us regarding his identity?”[br]
Mr. Caine hesitated only a moment before bowing his head in acquiescence. “I believe you must be referring to the Earl of Woodford, my lady.” A brief pause followed. “Will that be all?”[br]
Chloe blinked. “Yes. Thank you, Mr. Caine.”[br]
The butler nodded before turning away and resuming his duties.
“Isn’t he the one whose parents—”[br]
“Yes,” Chloe said, silencing her sister. It was as if her heart had suddenly been filled with lead. Shaking off the melancholy that had swooped down upon her the moment she’d learned of Woodford’s identity, she placed her hand against Fiona’s elbow and guided her through the foyer and toward the hallway beyond, no longer surprised by the solemnity with which Woodford had regarded her from the carriage. Somewhere, trapped inside that man, was the little boy who’d once suffered the tragic loss of his parents, and Chloe found that her heart ached for him.

Adventure, intrigue and reluctant romance, The Earl's Complete Surrender is a delightfully dramatic story. This is Sophie Barnes Second edition to her Thornecliff Manor series. I'm mostly assuming because I missed the first one, Lady Sarah's Sinful Desires, but I believe they run simultaneously or close to it.  [br] [br]

Chloe, the Countess of Newbury is just out of her year of mourning for her abusive bastard of a husband. She's on a mission to find a book, the Political Journal, that will, at least, make her marriage have a little meaning. Unbeknownst to her, James, the Earl of Woodford is on a mission to find the book for the King and to finally find out who murdered his parents.  They eventually join together to solve the mystery and fall in love in the process.  [br] [br]

Chloe is an admirable lady. She's gone through some very bad things in her life and is, of course, wary of men. James has lived his life as a loner. They both come out of their shells bit by bit and it's so nice to watch happen. The pace was nice, the action well done and the mystery, reasonably hard to figure out.  [br]

Review ~ Dukes are Forever by Anna Harrington ~ Seduction and Revenge

Guardian and Wards! Carriage Accidents and Betrayal. Seduction and Revenge! Anna Harrington Brings it All in her debut novel, Dukes are Forever!

[space size=15]

[book-info]

 [space size=10]

Heroine ~ Kate Benton is an independent, resourceful and self-reliant woman.  She is only 20 but has studied medicine for most of her life. She is determined to run her estate Bramble, and to keep practicing medicine. She's vulnerable as well because no matter what her asshole of a father does, and he does some very bad things, she still yearns to have her father's love. [br]

  [space size=5]

Hero ~ Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, is more of an army Colonel than a Duke. He was thrust into the Dukedom when his older brother and his wife were killed in a carriage accident. He actively seeks vengeance from the drunken man, Philip Benton, who was driving the other carriage that killed his family. He's very stubborn,  autocratic and very distrustful and expects his orders to be obeyed without question.

[br]

  [space size=5]

Edward has won Kate's estate and guardianship in his act of revenge. He thinks she's a child and goes to the estate to assess the situation and hire a governess. Needless to say, there are shocking discoveries to be made. Kate and Edward banter and argue from the moment they meet. The chemistry between them flies off the page! [spoiler]Edward deflowers his own ward and then somehow gets it into his head that she seduced him! (He was betrayed by his sister-in-law before her marriage and is extremely distrustful of women) He does something very stupid after that and pisses me off!! He really grovels later but it takes him a while to figure out how big a dunderhead he is![/spoiler]

I loved the secondary characters! Edwards Aunt is a classy broad and his fellow soldier friends are so dang interesting!

For a debut novel, this was an emotion packed adventure! I can't wait to read the next one, Along Came a Rogue!

Synopsis

ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE

Battlefields and barrooms hold much more interest for Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, than a little girl's fondness for dolls and lace. When he takes possession of his enemy's estate, everything that villain held dear—including his daughter—belongs to Edward. Hire a governess, arrange a dowry, give a few reassurances, and be off on his way—that's Edward's plan. But he's in for the shock of his life. For his new ward is a beautiful, impetuous, and utterly irresistible woman...

...AND WAR

Kate Benton is stunned. Who is this arrogant, infuriating man who's invited himself into her home and taken over her life? Her vow: to do everything in her power to convince him to leave her—and Brambly House—alone. Yet as chilly days melt into sultry nights, Kate sees glimpses of kindness underneath Edward's cool fa├žade . . . and a passionate nature that takes her breath away. There's so much she doesn't know about this man. But does she dare trust this devilish duke with her heart?

Review ~ Caught By You by Jennifer Bernard

 [br]

A sexy new Sports Romance! Jennifer Bernard's second in her A Love Between the Bases series! Caught by You is a down to earth, sports romantic comedy!

Enter to Win a Love Between the Bases Print Bundle including, All of Me and Caught by You!

Excerpt

He ran a hand through the rough curls at the back of his head. “I have to confess something.” His Catholic-boy conscience had been tugging at him this whole time. “Only a couple of those library books are mine. Mostly they’re my neighbor’s. He’s house-bound, so I pick up books for him.” [br]
Amusement lit up her little heart-shaped face. “Your confession is that you don’t read big piles of books, and that you go to the library for your neighbor? I’m crushed. I was thinking there was a secret genius hidden inside that ripped body.” [br]
“Maybe I was trying to impress you. We’ve been dancing around each other all season. Don’t you want to see if there’s anything to this chemistry?” [br]
Her eyes widened. “Here? Are you trying to add public indecency to all those fines?” [br]
“Just a kiss. One kiss. There’s nothing indecent about a kiss.” [br]
She considered that for a long moment, while a pleasant tension rose between them. Finally she seemed to make up her mind. She took a step forward, brushing against him. [br]
“Nothing indecent, Priest? I’ve got news for you.” [br]
“What’s that?” [br]
“There is if you do it right.” And she lifted her mouth to his. [br]

I haven't read many sports romances as I'm not a big fan of sports. I chose to read this one because of the romantic comedy aspect. Baseball players are hot, too!  Look like I stepped into a series but  I didn't feel that I needed to read the first one. Although that couple does make a cameo in this one.  I truly enjoyed this one! It was sweet, funny, and has some really heart-wrenching moments! It was all around good fun! [br]
[space size=5]
Heroine ~  Donna MacIntyre, a hilariously sarcastic former "party girl", she has done some growing up! She will do anything to get custody of her four-year-old son, even pin a football pin on her label and dress "professionally" and work at a boring dentist office.[br]
[space size=5]
Hero ~ Called the "Priest" because of his vow of chastity while the season is in play,  catcher Mike Solo is a guide to all the young players on the team. He can't get sexy Donna MacIntyre out of his head! He's a very protective, sweet, and funny guy!
[space size=5]
Jennifer Bernard's writing flows very casually, real down to earth. Her characters are full of life, quirky fun individuals. Donna and Mike rocked! From the opening scene to the very end I was invested in their relationship. There were plenty of secondary characters that I would like to know more about. If you're looking for a fun, entertaining, laugh-out-loud read, this one is for you!
